Eutrophication has become a major threat to water quality in the U.S., Europe, and Australasia. In most cases, freshwater eutrophication is accelerated by increased inputs of phosphorus (P), of which agricultural runoff is now a major contributor, due to intensification of crop and animal production systems since the early 1990s'. Once little information is available on the impacts of Brazilian agriculture in water quality, recent changes in crop and animal production systems in Brazil were evaluated in the context of probable implications of the fate of P in agriculture. Due to losses caused by water erosion, the development of techniques that increase the efficiency of soil conservation practices is fundamental. Terracing of agricultural lands is an important conservation practice. Bearing in mind that improperly built terraces may negatively affect the landscape, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the efficiency as well as the adequacy of retention terraces. Assessments were performed in four terraces implanted in different states, all located in the mideastern region of the state of Minas Gerais. Atrazine and picloram adsorption in organic horizon forest samples under laboratory conditions Planta Daninha

Adsorption of two herbicides, atrazine and picloram, displaying different sorption characteristics, were evaluated for O (organic) horizon samples collected from SMZs (streamside management zones) in Piedmont (Ultisol) of Georgia, USA. Samples were randomly collected from within 5 SMZs selected for a study of surface flow in field trials. The five SMZs represented five different slope classes, 2, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. Results indicate that 0 horizons have the potential for sorbing atrazine from surface water moving through forested SMZs. Atrazine adsorption was nearly linear over a 24-hour period. Efecto de la cobertura vegetal y raíces en la erosión del suelo Colegio de Postgraduados

Se avaluó el efecto de la cobertura vegetal y de las raíces, de maíz (Zea mays L.), frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), calabacita (Cucurbita pepo L.) y avena (Avena sativa L.), sobre el escurrimiento superficial y la perdida del suelo. El trabajo se realizo en un campo experimental de la Universidad Autónoma Chapingo y se utilizaron 8 tratamientos, 2 para cada cultivo (4 fueros subparcelas con cobertura vegetal y 4 subparcelas sin cobertura y solo con raíces, mismas que resultaron de cortar al ras del suelo los cultivos estudiados. Glyphosate retention in grassland riparian areas is reduced by the invasion of exotic trees Phyton

In this study, we examined some aspects regarding the effect of willow trees (Salix fragilis L.) invasion of grassland riparian environments in the Argentinean Pampas on the runof reduction, sedimentation and glyphosate retention in the riparian vegetation strip (RVS). To assess the influence of willows on the filtering mechanisms, we performed runof simulation experiments in plots of 1.5 x 2.5 m, in coastal environments characterized by the presence of willows or the lack of trees. Despite the short length of the experimental plots, the retention of glyphosate in the controls, with no trees, was higher and reached almost 74%. ABSTRACT The greater probability of small rainfall events occurring in semi-arid regions, and the little understanding of their role in hydrological processes, has led to this investigation of surface runoff generated during these events in two adjacent micro basins in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The types of plant cover to be investigated were the Phytogeographical Caatinga Domain under regeneration for 35 years (CPDReg) and thinned CPD (CPDThin), which consisted of the elimination of trees with a diameter of <10 cm. ABSTRACT Changes in the Brazilian Forest Code (BFC) have soften the criteria for recovery and conservation of permanent preservation areas (PPAs), enhancing processes related to surface runoff. The aim of this study is to understand the effects of changes in PPA classification criteria established by BFC of 2012 to the detriment of BFC from 1965 considering the surface runoff response in the basin draining the upper Marrecas River valley in the flow peaks. ABSTRACT: A procedure to estimate the center pivot maximum application rate, based on equipment and soil characteristic is presented. It was developed to minimize the surface runoff. To achieve this objective, the Green and Ampt (GA) infiltration equation was modified to include surface sealing and surface storage. The highest application rate is determined by solving a system of equations which incout to application rate and its derivative and the GA and its derivative. Sediment production and soil water infiltration under different simulated rainfall characteristics AGRIAMBI

ABSTRACT The study was carried out to evaluate sediment production, water infiltration and surface runoff in an Ultisol under simulated rainfalls with similar erosivity, but different combinations of intensity (Int) and duration (Dur). The rainfalls were applied after soil tillage in the period from August to September 2017, in Seropédica, RJ State, Brazil. Using a computer program, the treatments were defined from the erosivity calculated for a rainfall with intensity of 60 mm h-1 and duration of 60 min, resulting in the other combinations of Int and Dur: 44.5 mm h-1 and 106 min; 53.5 mm h-1 and 78 min; 66.9 mm h-1 and 48 min; and 76.5 mm h-1 and 38 min, in a completely randomized design with five repetitions. Simulated effect of wetting/drying periods for two textural soils amended with biochar at a catchment scale CIGR Journal

Biochar is considered as an option to ameliorate soil functions, by improving soil physical and hydraulic soil properties. This study investigated the effect of biochar and of wetting and drying cycles on the water infiltration at laboratory and at a hypothetical watershed scenario. In the laboratory, test samples with 2.5 and 5% (by dry mass) of a mango-wood biochar were added to a sandy and sandy loam soil material.
